Gone with the fashionista above for the headline shot, she was the last photo of the day, saw her 500 metres down the road. Think she saw me and the camera as well. Very simple in colour terms and minimalist but never the less very striking with the flat cap giving it that finishing touch. Very individual and definetly a FASHIONISTA!

Late July and August turns quiet in London with the school holidays. Tourists in abundance and I mean by the coach loads at present but actual fashionistas will prove to be a bit thinner on the ground.

Tuesday was spent in London Fields and Dalston to check out the fashion vibe there to get off the tourist trail in Central London. Just a flying visit and a big fat zero. It’s supposed to be the new place to be, better than Shoreditch, I wasn’t convinced. Maybe I was in the wrong part? Maybe the weekends are better or maybe it rocks more at night when everybody is back from work?

Wednesday went all the way down to Richmond and again zilch. Tried Chiswick on the way back and again nothing. Peckham is another area that is being looked into which is hipsterville at present, amongst others, but at present Central London up to Zone 2 on the Tube Map is where it seems to be. Go beyond that and the dress code is safe and follow the norm and the suburbia look. No earth shattering ground breaking stuff here. The difference was staggering when you arrive back in Knightsbridge, Kensington and Chelsea.

Took about 20 shots on the day but ruthlessly cut it down to 9 to what I would call “fashionistas” on what was a quiet day in “street style” terms. Decided to take it out anyway for a spin and a test drive today to see if it’s a keeper just for a laugh to see what this lens can do and more importantly see how the women react to a lens the size of a house pointing in their direction?

Monochrome and stripes. Outside Selfridges Oxford St W1 Canon DSLR 300mm lens

The results were interesting to put it mildly but I wasn’t getting as many smiles as with my small dinky wide angle lens. Come to think of it didn’t get any smiles at all. Tension was definitely in the air. As soon as that camera was raised they notice even when you’re 100m down the road. Frosty stares are the result. How do they do that!

Despite the lens getting the general thumbs down and a frosty reception on the female front on the streets of London, it gets a thumbs up from me producing some nice arty blurred backgrounds (bokeh). Makes a change from the wide angle shots. Bokeh is not really my thing when shooting on the streets as what you gain in arty smoky backgrounds you lose in Street vibe. Street vibe is more important to me but these shots sure do look pretty.

This lens may get used from time to time for street style shooting but standing half mile down the road and popping a shot is not really my style, I prefer the more intimate in your face approach. The shots look more connected and I think the women prefer the cards on the table approach rather than the sly hand tactics that scream stalker alert.

Shots are from Oxford Street, Regent Street, Soho and Covent Garden taken today 21 April. Some of these are full length and others are portraits or what I call beauty shots. If these shots generate interest there will be more in the future. The lens passed the test bar some flare issues when shooting into the sun. See photos.

This lady was part of the DJ Fresh entourage at Radio 1 a few weeks back this casual fashionista has been called “The Ramones Girl”. She’s got something going on without even trying. I think she is aware of that situation. Black leather bike style jacket in hand, black top with Ramones and off the shoulder, leggings and trainers . A 100% music industry fashionista, she caught my eye even with minimal makeup and visa versa. A picture in the making. Just had to be done!

Story: Ellie Goulding was the music celeb I was after at Radio 1 a few weeks back and she took longer than most stars to come out. She was on the Fearne Cotton Show, crowds were waiting outside including press and normally when Fearne comes out, the star comes out pretty soon afterwards, but Ellie was nowhere to be seen. Panic stations. In the meantine a prominent Vlogger came out and also a DJ by the name of DJ Fresh with an all lady entourage. The Ramones Girl was part of that entourage, she stood out even in her black casual attire, she didn’t mind having a few snaps taken and the rest as they say is history. Did get Ellie in the end who strangely enough was also dressed in black about an hour later.
