This patrol route has now been expanded to take in Lower Regents Park, Baker St, Baker St Station and Marylebone Road and  Madam Tussauds, Marylebone Station, Portman Sq, Gloucester Place,  Wigmore St, St Christophers Place and Harley St. Sounds a big area but it’s quite compact with a good mixture of Londoners, Tourists and of course Fashionistas homing in on the Marylebone High St Boutique culture.

Blazing sunshine ensured the fashionistas were out and about en masse which is quite handy when you are after some street style like myself.

General street style observations. Late Sept/Early Oct 2015

Faux fur is still in but more in detail form than in full on coats but then the weather is still warm.

Noticing ponchos as an emerging theme and culottes are in the ascendant.

Monochrome stripes and prints seem to be out but monochrome in other forms still cuts it.

Autumn shades (think colour of  leaves) combined with black are cool

All black still rocks regardless of what is going on and always will

Leather skirts with zip fronts are an emerging trend

Hats are becoming increasingly common especially the floppy or big rimmed variety.

Big chunky builders boots are hip

Knee length boots another emergence

Leather faux or real is prominent

Camden Fashionista spotting getting the latest Street Style vibe in the Camden Town NW1 area late September. All photos taken on a strangely sunny day on Wednesday  23 September 2015.

Emerging colour trend? Black Leather and Burgundy and Shades of Brown and Hat Camden Market NW1

The patrol route took in Camden Tube, Camden Rd up to Sainsbury’s, Parkway, Camden High St, Camden Market, Camden Lock and The Stables Market and Chalk Farm Rd. Sounds a lot but it’s quite a compact area compared to some areas covered. After 3+ hours the required quota was reached of about  a dozen. That’s quick. Started clouding over just as I packed up which was perfect!

No punky fashionistas, some grunge and a dash of vintage. Thankfully the tourist levels were visibly down and the density of fashionistas was up, a vast improvment and much better than my last visit which was more like a visit to Disney World in the peak holiday season.

A mixture of shots here just looking for emerging trends of the more alternative variety, any colour shifts from the slowly fading but still prominent mononochrome fever which was even still prevalent at LFW. Also a couple of shots of what seems to be common on the London streets that’s seems to be increasingly adopted by the masses.

A very quiet day at Camden Market with the August school holidays and the bank holiday a week or so away. Reasonably busy with tourists but a bit thin on the ground when it came to Fashionistas and Punky types. Managed to get just 2  which is unusual!

The West End is also VERY VERY quiet in fashionista terms out there at present. With the school holidays in full swing and the August Bank Holiday fast approaching combined with a distinct lack of sunshine for August, I think a lot are on holiday elsewhere. Loads of women on the streets but it’s obvious they are predominantly tourists which makes it a bit of a fashionista spotting challenge. I can normally find a dozen in a few hours in the West End, that’s pretty much guaranteed. Had to go back a second day just to find half that! That’s the August effect.

Decided to take it out anyway for a spin and a test drive today to see if it’s a keeper just for a laugh to see what this lens can do and more importantly see how the women react to a lens the size of a house pointing in their direction?

Monochrome and stripes. Outside Selfridges Oxford St W1 Canon DSLR 300mm lens

The results were interesting to put it mildly but I wasn’t getting as many smiles as with my small dinky wide angle lens. Come to think of it didn’t get any smiles at all. Tension was definitely in the air. As soon as that camera was raised they notice even when you’re 100m down the road. Frosty stares are the result. How do they do that!

Despite the lens getting the general thumbs down and a frosty reception on the female front on the streets of London, it gets a thumbs up from me producing some nice arty blurred backgrounds (bokeh). Makes a change from the wide angle shots. Bokeh is not really my thing when shooting on the streets as what you gain in arty smoky backgrounds you lose in Street vibe. Street vibe is more important to me but these shots sure do look pretty.

This lens may get used from time to time for street style shooting but standing half mile down the road and popping a shot is not really my style, I prefer the more intimate in your face approach. The shots look more connected and I think the women prefer the cards on the table approach rather than the sly hand tactics that scream stalker alert.

Shots are from Oxford Street, Regent Street, Soho and Covent Garden taken today 21 April. Some of these are full length and others are portraits or what I call beauty shots. If these shots generate interest there will be more in the future. The lens passed the test bar some flare issues when shooting into the sun. See photos.

Camden Market is a good place to get photos in general with a good mix of tourists and locals all ready to embrace the bohemian atmosphere that this part of the word is renowned for. You tend to see more characters here and women seem to let rip  and take a few more risks and maybe wear a hat when normally they would not than an area say such as Oxford Street/Regent Street which tends to be a bit more homegenised in the fashion stakes.  You can get away with it here as nobody cares!

The photo above for me grabs the headline out of this collection, she was miles away deep in thought and I managed to get this shot merely feet away with the sun shining so very brightly on her, it’s all about the hat and the mystery.

The photo below is a good close second. just stood in front of her pretending to take a picture of the street and market but I think she knew what I was doing, the sun was catching her hair so well just had to get the shot.  She never moved an inch and neither of us said a word!.

Photo above for me was the best of the bunch, class, style, ultra cool with good looks and she had the walk. She really stood out and had her own individual street style!

In this Part 1 for February 2015, the DSLR was ditched, it’s fast but just too high profile, even shooting from the hip. The women definetly don’t look comfortable around it. Will still use a DSLR on occasion, but Siberian February will be mobile month . SO this gallery is a mess around with my Nokia 635 mobile to see what can be gleened off the London streets in fashion terms. Photo quality is highly variable as a result.

Inspiration to get into the thick of the action came from a certain street photographer by the name of Garry Winogrand. Saw a video, watching him in action on the streets. A revelation. I can do that I thought.

Selfridges Fashionistas Oxford Street W1

So the new learned “street photography” technique to get the shots above and below is basically what I call “in your face” get within 3 feet of a street stopping fashionista, stop dead for a nano second, smile, if they’re not looking hostile stick my mobile in their face, no messing, smile afterwards and walk off as if nothings happened, I’m just checking my Twitter updates in a rather bizarre manner. Objective to get some very close shots to make these women look as best as I can.

Shots taken within slapping distance, but haven’t been slapped yet . ……. but it’s coming. For some strange reason this technique seems to work? Facial expressions include eyes down, indifference, half smiles, he’s a nut job look, too much in a hurry to really care and of course once in a blue moon the daggers.

So what gave we got? Hats, scarves, boots, Selfridges, Michael Kors bags x2, leggings, faux fur, blondes, brunettes, Oxford Street, Soho, Hanover Square, Covent Garden + Piazza and more. General observation. Shiny leggings seem to be the thing at the mo!

As predicted there was a lot of interest in the first all new Fashion Patrol as in Part 1 so here’s the latest updates with more fashionista spotting whilst pounding the streets of Central London. Anybody can do this……. but getting decent shots that’s the incredibly hard bit. It really is hard work!

All Fasharazzi shots are done Street Photography style as in candid and no posing as in street portraits. Never said a word to any of these women. Basically took shots of women if they looked interesting, were attractive, were wearing something eye catching, had something going on or a combination of all these things. The golden rule is if I can see you in a crowd 200 metres away and you’ve got confidence to rock your look then you are here. If I was clocked and given the look that can kill then I got the message and obviously you are not.

Street purists argue that black and white with it’s emphasis on light and shade, form and tone is the only way to go. For fashion I think colour is the only way. May try some B&W in the future for monochrome fashionistas though.

Some shots taken with a Fuji Bridge camera and some more recent ones taken with my Canon DSLR which I use for celebrity work. Mobile shots are marked accordingly. All shots from the hip, again street purists don’t shoot this way. I’m not a street purist and say the different view point gives the photos an edgy look. All shots taken on the move just wandering through the London crowds.

Locations are mainly Oxford Street, Regent Street, Soho and Covent Garden at present. Very difficult to get these shots but when everything comes together the result is quite something. Different areas of London are being looked at in the future that have a bit more urban grit and harder fashion styles. Capturing the fashionista but also the some of the urban environment that she is in which is also interesting in it’s own right. Not everybody lives in London.

So What’s the fashion trend on the streets of London in January 2015?

General Observations:

With the cold weather and generally grey skies this is deepest darkest winter and the colour palette is distinctly monochrome at the moment in reflection of this with the locals with splashes of colour with bags, scarves and other add ons. Really struggled to find any colour.

What’s in? Leopard skin print coats seem to be in along with big faux fur for the more adventurous with faux fur gilets seeming to be right on. Parkas’ with the big furry hoods are the norm rather than the exception along with bubble jackets again with fur. Fur is there somewhere!

If you’re looking for colour the Chinese/Japanese tourists consistently seem to be bolder than most with reds, yellows, pinks and greens and sky blues with bubble jackets being popular.

Hats of all types are in with Trilby and Fedora making their presence known along with Faux Fir/Leather trapper hats. Boots of all types but sneakers such as the ubiquitous Converse are still common out on the London streets this winter. Uggs not as common as they used to be but still have devotee’s and have become cult classics like the Doctor Martins so are still making an appearance.

Denim as always in and leggings are popular, plain, multi coloured and shiny black seeming to be popular. Jeans with shiny leggings over the top halfway was spotted on Portobello Road. Too quick for me didn’t get the shot.
